No New Posts The Bonaparte Archipelago

The Bonaparte Archipelago is a group of islands and inlets off the coast, with each island containing similar land and vegetation. It is possible to swim to some of the islands, but usually only bachelor stallions or stallions with small herds attempt it as those with foals at foot cannot make the swim.

An old abandoned ranch station where brumbies used to get caught and broken for mans use.

No New Posts Warabo Flat

A large, well grassed flat that many brumbies congregate at. Generally visited by herds of three or more horses or two year olds trying their luck at gaining fillies from other young stallion. Sometimes this angers older stallions residing on the flat and the young stallions get a beating - but this doesnt stop them returning for more.

No New Posts King Leopold Ranges

A range of hills covered in grass and small trees, the King Leopold ranges are a good spot to find a picking in the dry, with hidden pockets of lush grass supplemented by the lennard river. The ranges run alongside Windjana Gorge.

No New Posts Windjana Gorge

A wide cut gorge half full of a fresh water river, with plenty of sandy areas to roll in during the dry months, though these are underwater in the wet. Plenty of vegetation is present in the gorge, as well as some interesting cave systems built into the limestone walls.

No New Posts The Lennard River

A wide river that cuts through both Windjana Gorge and the King Leopold ranges, lennard river is a favoured spot for many freshwater crocodiles. luckily, fish are plentiful, and the crocodiles rarely snap at anything larger. The lennard river provides a good source of water for all its surrounding areas.

No New Posts Tunnel Creek

A wide, underground water system With high ceilings and banks of damp sand along its edges, this is a good hiding place if escape is needed, but its not advised to spend a night in the depths of tunnel creek - it gets awfully cold once the suns gone down. The creek is cold and fresh, sweet to taste.

No New Posts Fitzroy River

The Fitzroy River flows for 733 kilometres from the King Leopold Ranges into King Sound gulf and is a favourite place for salt water crocodiles. It has extensive flooding and can have a strong and dangerous current in the wet season.

No New Posts Geikie Gorge

Geikie Gorge has walls of granite lifting to 30 metres high and is filled with the waters of the Fitzroy. The gorge has no solid ground, only water, but ledges of stone allow a horse to stand above the water. A small natural rock stairway leads to a large flat area of rock underneath an overhang of stone, a good place to weather a storm.

No New Posts Old Halls Creek

An old human residence, long deserted. Old Halls Creek is where gold was first found in WA, but is now a ghost town with only a few structures still standing and wilderness taking over. Brumbies still avoid this remnant of humans, disliking the rattling of the tin roofs.

No New Posts Wolfe Creek Crater

Wolfe Creek Crater is a meteorite impact crater. The crater averages about 875 metres in diameter, 60 metres from rim to present crater floor. Vegetation is good, but not many brumbies venture to the crater, but stay by the nearby creek.

No New Posts Red Tail Plain

A wide plain that stretches out to the range, with swaying golden grasses and dusty pindan underfoot. So named because of the plain being home to many desert mice, and in turn, becoming a favoured hunting ground for red tailed hawks.

No New Posts The Kingfishers Waterhole

A deep waterhole named for its most common inhabitants - the azure kingfisher. Bright blue and beautiful, the kingfishers hang around the waterhole and its surrounding eucaluypts. The waterhole is shady and a welcome comfort from the heat.

No New Posts Devils Scree

A wide, steep rockfall hanging off the shoulder of the ranges. Too much noise here could cause a rock slide, the ground is unstable and easy to unsettle if too much weight is placed onto it, even the nimble footed brumbies avoid devils scree if they can help it.

No New Posts The Mangroves

A boggy, frightening place crawling with crabs and nasty insects that can irritate and sicken a horse. The roots of the mangrove trees are gnarled and rough, but can provide an easier stepping surface if a brumby needs to pass through.

No New Posts Pindan Grasslands

A wide plain made up of the red dirt pindan and spinifex grass, with the occasional boab tree and acacia to provide shade and shelter. The earth and dirt gets very dry and dusty in the dry season.

No New Posts Anemboe Valley

A dry valley with many scattered limestone rocks and boabs. A small herd could live here and be satisified with the grazing, but introduce another herd and fights will break out over food.

No New Posts Mulga Pass

A narrow pass between two steep sided hills, where the grazing is plentiful and lush because of the runoff. However, the king brown snake likes to bask on the scattered rocks in the pass, and can be a danger to young foals.

No New Posts Goshawk Pass

Bare and unfriendly, goshawk pass is not ventured through often. It bares hardly enough grazing for one brumby, let alone a herd. However, the boabs inside the pass are beautifully structured, and have many legends surrounding them.
